Who am I?
My name is Nick Bambach and I am an academic librarian. I was born and raised on Long Island, New York and currently live in Texas. I have two Master’s Degrees in Film & Media Studies and Library Science. I also host two successful podcasts: Rock in Retrospect and Needle Drops (with my friend Jordan Raycine).
What are my writing interests?
I primarily write about the music industry with a particular focus on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. I find the Rock Hall to be a fascinating yet often frustrating topic to discuss. Flaws aside, I love the idea of immortalizing legendary musicians in the hallowed halls of Cleveland’s museum.
I also like to write about the music I love and my taste is all over the place. If I had to pick my top three genres, it’d be R&B, New Wave/Alternative and Pop. As for my favorite artists, I’d say it’s The Clash, Prince, Depeche Mode, The Allman Brothers Band and Donna Summer.
Given my background in film and media studies, I like to write about movies from an analytical and historical perspective. I love to watch all kinds of movies across all eras, genres and styles. I’m a frequent user on Letterboxd but I might write more in-depth film essays on this site.
Why is it called Midnight Logs in Garageland?
The Clash is my all-time favorite band. They, perhaps more than any other band in history, perfectly captured the intersection between politics and rock and roll. They also, ironically, released my all-time favorite album London Calling on Dec. 14, 1979 and I was born exactly 10 years later. It’s crazy things work out sometimes! After brainstorming ideas, I combined two Clash songs to inspire my new blog’s title: “Midnight Log” (from 1980’s Sandinista!) and “Garageland” (from 1977’s self-titled debut). This title allows me to take a broader approach to writing and I sort of like it that way.
